Perhaps you are thinking "CRT" rather
than "front projection." A micro mirror device or LCD
doesn't care what direction it is pointed relative to the viewer, it
will display at its native resolution regardless of whether the screen
is between it and the viewer.
Likewise, a cathode ray tube can vary its resolution whether or not it pointed in the same direction as the viewer.
