ok, as best as I can tell, that code was left over from long ago.  It's 
pretty clear to me that it's completely pointless since it checks for 
$this->chanid, which is set just a few lines above (and above that, it's 
checked that it doesn't exist).

I'll be removing this and committing it and a few other things into the 
stable branch shortly.
