thoughts on the redremote ir sender

Is anybody in the UK have a cable (telewest / NTL) box, specifically a
scientific atlanta 4200DVB and one of these red remote serial irsenders.

The Wife in her infinite wisdom decided to dump Sky in favour of cable.

I have built an ir sender based on the simple transmitter circuit
described on the lirc site, and am driving it with the lirc_serial driver
and lirc 0.8.0. The channel changing, is really unreliable with the cable
box not registering some of the sent commands, although it does work
correctly occasionally.

Would one of these redeyes be the answer to my prayers, or should I
persevere with lirc, and if the latter has anybody got any tips on
improving the reliability.
