mythgame only starts roto

I am trying to get a mythgame working with mame (xmame). xmame itself
works as a charm. Typing xmame 'gamename' on the prompt will launch
xmame with the correct game. From mythgame however, when I select a game
to start it always starts roto :( What debugging/logging can I enable to
see what's going wrong?
