Upgrade Help! fc3 .18 to fc5 .19

I have hosed my system and wanted to pass this by everyone to see what you thought. I can no longer use rpm on my system, and rather than try to match all dependencies restoring it, I wanted to upgrade the system to fc5 using a dvd, then upgrade .18 to .19 using yum. Will this work? or should I just start from scratch?
