I wanted to ask the same question..
forget it. it was wrong.
I think I wasn't wrong. One JVM instance is (still) single operating system thread IMHO. At least it was in 1.4.2 on Linux and Windows and I haven't heard they improve it on 1.5.0.

Otherwise ps aux should show process "java" few times.
