Cinelerra - thinking out loud

Hi,
I've got a Winfast bt878-based card - and after clawing my way up the 
learning curve far enough - it is no working fine with mplayer and xawtv 
- both for off-air TV and composite-video inputs.

I've got cinelerra running and am clawing up that learning curve for 
editing.

cinelerra has a video-record function, which allows me to enter the 
device (which I'm rashly assuming is /dev/video) - and select input, 
channel, etc.  This just results in a blank screen

At the risk of showing a frightening level of ignorance, I'm 
conjecturing that cinelerra needs more information and interface code 
than just the device.  Can anyone advise whether I'm conjecturing in the 
right direction at least - or even (wildest dreams here) point me at 
information or code that is a step along the way.  I'm guessing worst 
case is that I need to delve much deeper into v4l2 and cinelerra source 
and build/plagiarise enough interface code to marry the two.
