I am looking for a USB mpeg2/4 NTSC capture device.
It will primarily be used with MythTV. The two devices I am looking at are:
Plextor ConvertX PX-TV402U and Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2. Any suggestions
about which one I should go with? Also any other suggestions?
Thanks!
PS Thanks for the help with my first capture card last summer.
The WinTV PVR-USB2 is supported by the pvrusb2 driver, which will
probably be added to the 2.6.17 kernel in a few months. The official
version of this driver currently only supports the older version of the
device (29xxx series, based on saa7115 + msp34xx) , but Mike Isely has
made significant progress this week in adding support for the newer
model (24xxx series, based on cx3584x) ... The newer driver is still in
development status, and it is hosted in Mike's pvrusb2-t1 mercurial
tree.....
I am not familiar with the plextor box, but I dont think it is
supported, at least not as of yet. Interestingly enough, the pvrusb2
driver also supports the Sasem OnAir usb2 device, although Mr. Isely and
I have not yet released patches adding that support, as this work is
still considered in experimental state.
Long story short, I don't think the plextor box is supported, but we can
probably add support if we had access to a sample.... I'd recommend the
Hauppauge box, as the common model is already supported, and full
support for the newer model is probably just a few days / weeks away.
After purchasing, if you need help getting the box to work in linux,
send another email here to the list and we'll give you some
instructions, depending on which model you end up with.
I hope this helps,
