I should make it clear that I have neither udev nor devfs but a static /dev
and I have created all those device files by hand according to
linux/Documentation/devices.txt

ls -l /dev/dvb/adapter0/

I have double checked these, but who knows ...

Thanks a lot, your help is appreciated very much.

Here is the relevant bit of lsmod. I have done

modprobe budget_av
modprobe tda8083 (that was the only one not loaded by the first modprobe)

Module Size Used by
tda8083 4996 0
budget_av 11776 0
saa7146_vv 38016 1 budget_av
video_buf 15108 1 saa7146_vv
v4l1_compat 11652 1 saa7146_vv
v4l2_common 4736 1 saa7146_vv
budget_core 6404 1 budget_av
dvb_core 64680 2 budget_av,budget_core
saa7146 12936 3 budget_av,saa7146_vv,budget_core
ttpci_eeprom 2176 1 budget_core
stv0299 9224 1 budget_av
tda10021 5380 1 budget_av
tda1004x 11396 1 budget_av

I have tried to start klear before and after the second modprobe, but with the
same results as yesterday. The only line showing up in the kernel messages
is

Mar 10 11:40:47 [kernel] saa7146: register extension 'budget_av'.

Maybe I am missing anything in my kernel config?
