Well, I did ONE google search (search term: 'v4l still image capture'), and
found this:
"Image Capture by Video4Linux"

I'm not sure what you were searching for, but maybe you need to learn how to
use google better.
It also links to these sites (and others):

Subject: Develop a simple application
Hello, im a begginer with v4l.
I need to code a program for authenticate users via facial
recognition with a webcam.
For the authentication and facial recognition i already have
a solution, my big problem is how to work with v4l to just
get some frames from the webcam. No streaming, nothing
complicated, just get some frames and put in BMP format.
I searched the web and i found just the API documentation,
and for a begginer like me, i think it is very confusing.
Soo..im writing into this mailing list to ask you if you have
any links , documentation, howtos, tuturials, or maybe some
tips that can help me coding this.
Thank you a lot.
