Webcam freezes screen

Ian,
the canonical apps to test your webcam is spcaview available on the spca5xx 
website.
You should used the following command:
spcaview -d /dev/video0 -f jpg -s 320x240
Can you test the next release candidate (rc7) available here :
http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca50x/Doc/allinone/
That should work with openSuse as i work with this distro :)
