True, and the kernel isn't really the place to try and overcome userspace
program limitations. I was thinking along those lines, just not so clearly.

Thanks, I decided to stick with the key values defined within the kernel
(input.h) and use lirc with the dev/input driver. This works well, just need
to add a udev rule to map the event device to a consistent soft link.
