Wes,

You are using what we call an, "ancient" kernel, with very old v4l-dvb modules.

You will need to upgrade your v4l-dvb modules using the mercurial
repository on linuxtv.org ... see the following howto:

http://linuxtv.org/repo

...although you might also run into further trouble... Based on your
dmesg output above, it is evident that you are using a non-vanilla
kernel -- Notice cx88 card #22... It SHOULD read, "pcHDTV 3000" , but
your driver reports <NULL> ... That looks quite shady to me. It also
looks like you are running a kernel older than 2.6.12, and I'm not
sure that the mercurial tree will build properly in your environment.

I would first try to follow the howto above. If it doesn't work, then
you might actually have to recompile your kernel using vanilla sources
from www.kernel.org.

Getting a new kernel will not be enough, however, since the support
for your card was added only very recently. Support for your card is
slated for official inclusion into the 2.6.18 kernel. So, after you
install your new kernel (2.6.12 or later) then you will need to build
and install the v4l-dvb modules from the mercurial repository.

Good Luck,

Mike

Ahh... I'm running Suse 9.3, which I keep updated. But, I believe Suse stays a bit behind the curve with kernels. uname -a gives me: Linux wespotts 2.6.11.4-21.11-default #1 Thu Feb 2 20:54:26 UTC 2006 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

I'd prefer to run mainly stock system, and I've been looking for an
excuse to upgrade. So, would anyone discourage me from going to Suse
10.1? My goal is to run a MythTV backend (or an alternative, possibly
freevo) with a MythTV frontend on my xbox (if I can ever make that
work reasonably well). I tend to use my linux box for a lot of random
stuff periodically but rarely anything consistantly. Could anyone
speculate whether or not I might have perfermance issues running a
"heavy-weight" distro (like Suse) on a 1.6Gz AMD Duron with 512M ram?

Also, thanks to you both for your help.

Wes

Wes,

Seems as if you had accidentally written to me in private. (cc's re-added)

Upgrading to SuSE 10.1 will not be enough. As I stated in my previous email, you will also have to install the v4l-dvb modules from the mercurial repository in order to add support for your Kworld Blackbird card. This will require that you have a vanilla kernel 2.6.12 or later installed. SuSE patches their kernels heavily, and they do not play nice with external kernel modules. Surely there is a way to do it, but you may run into trouble.

As far as your system requirements, 1.6 GHz Duron 512 M ram is not a bad system... A mythtv backend should be able to run fine on a machine like that, although there are some other solutions available as well.

Good Luck,

Michael
