Hi Jon. This may not be much help as my card is a Hauppage Win Tv Express, but
it is a bt878 card, using bttv, and tda9887.

I had problems with sound on a bunch of distros. FC, Debian, and Kubuntu, and
needed to set options for when the tda9887 is loaded.

This is what I have in /etc/modules in Kubuntu-5.10 with the 2.6.12-10-386
kernel.

tda9887 port2=0 pal=I (thats a capital i)

port2=0 got the sound working. Prior to that I just had static, with a bit of
TV timebase sound running in the background. The pal=I option is to get sound
from UK PAL transmissions that I receive in France.

I don't know which kernel you have on Ubuntu 6.10, but if it's a 2.6.18
kernel, the port2=0 option needs to be set for the tuner module, as tda9887
is integrated in the tuner module for kernel 2.6.18 onwards.

Let us know if it works.

Nigel.
