multiple usb pwc cameras freezing

On some computers i can get several pwc cameras running at once, but on some others, only the first camera open doesn't freeze the process that requests a frame, all others just halt, and it doesn't even matter if i do it from one process for all cameras or one process per camera. it's a soft freeze, interruptible by Ctrl+C.

I have three computers:

  1. The computer on which I can get multiple cameras running is a Toshiba
laptop running Ubuntu 6.06 (Linux 2.6.15). I couldn't get the newest
pwc.ko to compile for some reason, so a friend had sent me a recent
     binary driver.

  2. A computer on which it doesn't work is a Celeron-D tower running
Ubuntu 6.10 but this computer has several other problems so I thought
I should try yet another computer to confirm.

  3. Another computer on which it doesn't work is a K8 tower running
Ubuntu 5.10. I thought that the problem might be a too old driver so
I installed Ubuntu 6.10 instead and it still didn't work, in exactly
the same way. I downloaded the driver's source and compiled (and
somehow this time I didn't have any compilation problems) and yet the
driver behaved in exactly the same way.

Any ideas?
