I'm thinking about ways to implement Martin's idea of smarter handling of short
URLs here.
It seems we would need an extra column in the Articles table which contains the
URL-sanitized title, for quick matching on a page request. Such a column would
have to be updated each time the article's title is edited. That, or it seems
we would need a very complex SQL query that would match a URL-sanitized string
to the real title at run-time. I'm not actually sure this is possible.
Comments on these ideas? I'm not exactly a SQL guru but I like this idea very much.
On the ideas I was proposing before Martin's comment, what about a checkbox
somewhere that would turn off/on the ability to double-escape Short URL's? It
would be sort of like the "fix HTML characters" feature. This way, we wouldn't
have to worry about which web server or mod_rewrite versions people are using.
I'd even be willing to code this feature if we thought that was a good idea.
