why this? itemtypes by nature are variants of an object. If they weren't 
different they wouldn't be different itemtypes to begin with, or am I 
missing something here?

2x does xml imports and exports via DD. The condition is that you pass 
all the tabular data through DD. So I guess the basis of what you are 
looking for is already there,
