The U designation refers to Universal PCI - this card will support 3.3v as well as 5v pci bus. You can see the difference with it having 2 notches on the pci edge connector.
The R2 refers to 'release 2', rather than the R2 protocol. I was only aware of an original and an R2U, but there you go !!
