I totally agree.
I've been using Asterisk with great success.
I don't agree that it's limited functionality though. With Asterisk and some cheap hardware you can do anything any other phone/voicemail system can do...and more...for a lot cheaper.
I would recommend you start out with the Digium TDM400P card with 1 to 4 FXS or FXO ports, depending on whether you want to hook up a PBX/PSTN-line or phones to it. For a PSTN-line you need an FXO module, and for a regular analog phone you need a FXS module. You can also get external adapters with FXO-ports. I actually have an Asterisk PBX running under both Microsoft Virtual Server and VMWare. Works like a charm, but you don't get proper conferencing and trunking as a virtual machine.
